> BMX PEG DAMAGE TO SKATEPARK CONCRETE
I know that this has been discussed previously, but I was hoping to get some input on the issue.
For those who are not aware, most council built skateparks are open for use by anyone including BMX riders. Many BMX riders use metal "pegs" which screw onto the axles of the bicycle. Many of the "tricks" which the BMXers perform involve slamming down onto the top edge of the curver concrete walls which causes cracking and destruction of the concrete.
What is the solution?
Many skateboarders would like BMXers to be banned from skateparks. I don't think that this would work. It would create a whole new headache on how to enforce the ban and it would cause unnecessary animosity between two groups of young people.
Could I suggest that the solution should be a technical one. How can construction be improved to minimize or eliminate this problem? I am not aware of any skatepark builders who have given this much thought. I personally have been involved in the design process of several parks so I have spoken a lot with builders and council. My own suggestion is to increase the size of the curved bevel of the top of the concrete immediately below the coping. Another idea would be to use an semi-flexible expansion strip between the coping and the top of the concrete.
Does anyone have any other ideas?
You just answered your own question.
They are called skateparks because they are built for skateboards...not BMXs.
BMX's can rally to get their own parks built and destroy the coping on those parks when and if they ever get them built.
In the mean time, the destruction of coping at skateparks by BMXs is going to cause friction no matter what you try to do.
Maybe skaters should turn up at BMX tracks and dig little ruts at the bottom of each jump to let them know what it feels like to have their terrain ruined by outside influences.

yep easiest solution would be to just fuck the bikes off. it would be easy to patrol at any popular park, just as long as there are always some tuff Cunt bowl riders around.
I share your angst and frustration about the damage caused by BMX riders. However, there are several problems with trying to ban BMXers. First, who is going to monitor skateparks 24/7? Even if there is a ban, the BMXers will just wait till no one is around then go for a burn. It only takes a few stupid peg stalls to do the damage. Secondly, don't we go to the skatepark to skate and have some fun? I think that acting like tough guys and telling BMXers to fuuuck off is only going to create a bummer vibe. Thirdly, skateparks are a fairly tenuous proposition for most councils with insurance worries, graffiti, littering and complaints from neighbours. They are essentially paid for by ratepayers. The kids of many of those ratepayers ride BMX bikes. If little Johnny is not allowed to ride at the skatepark down the street those parents will question why their rates money is being spent this way.
I know most of you reading this won't like this kind of stuff but unfortunately it is a reality.
Any comment from industry guys like Convic?
Hmm.. Sorry I didn't bother reading any posts just yet, but there is something else that causes similar damage to concrete just under the coping.
Heat expansion! Yes! The coping will expand and contract, which is what can cause the same issue. The hip at Five Dock has already got the same problem, but no sign of peg damage.
Ok.. posts read.
The only solution I've seen that works is a metal strip about 6 inches wide. Problem with that is the expansion and slip factor.
never thought of that michael and that's totally common sense too about the heat expansion. aaannd the devonport sk8 park's got the worst copin' ever lol. i'm gonna take pic's of it one day and post 'em. when the park was 1st build the copin' was too thin (would u believe)(our grind box copin' and the ledge on the fun box is 'round copin' not angle iron). aaannd the first step of the grind box was pretty much f@#ked and bumpy as all hell after the first year orso ... now the devonport council has welded hmmm say 1/4 width of 'round copin' over the damaged thin copin'. lol oh well
Stop hateing on bike riders, alot of them are relly cool where i live, fuck im better friends with most of them the most our skaters. Plus its not always them, Ever heard of workers not knowing how to lay cement right?
I don't think it's right to claim that rate payers will be upset when little Johnny can't ride his bike at the SKATE park. It's not our fault that the bikers dropped the ball and now have to come and second our shit we worked hard for.
If there was a ban, maybe the parents would get off their asses and get Johnny his own place to ride a BMX and then all our problems would be solved.
Ban BMX at skateparks, they are dangerous, move faster than skaters and are less maneuverable. I'm all for fucking them right off so no support for your plan from me.
Oh and Dreamland already charge more if there are going to be bikes allowed to cover the cost of re-enforcements needed.
The last thing we need is to cover the costs for BMXers through my fucken rates.
I wasn't aware of this damage until recently (I don't ride or dskate, I'm just a photographer) when I went to weston park, a park dominated by bikes (one of ACT's few dedicated BMX stores is in the vicinity, and it's got good lines for bikes). Someone had some around with a stencil and sprayed on the flat near the coping 'NO PEGS". This was could be seen as a 'pre-emptive strike', but that's what Bush called the Afghan War. The park is showing some small signs of rust on the coping as a result of pegs, but no concrete was visibly cracked in the area I saw.
On the banning front, it'd be very hard to ban BMXs from parks as, it has already been pointed out, it'd be a bastard to police and would create a hell of a lot of tension between the two groups where none is necessary. While it is true that they are faster an less manouverable than skateboards, this is also true of skateboards when compared to blades (at least, from what I've seen). Anyone fancy the banning of bikes and boards and letting people on pizza-cutters have the parks to themselves? I sure as hell don't. I know it's a pain to deal with, but it's a problem you're most likely going to have to deal with in a positive manner. Instead of trying to get bikes banned, why not try to get better grants from the council to improve concrete quality and more repairs? This means no angst, everyone's happy because the park gets re-done more often and most importantly, nobody is forced to stop using it.

in accordance wit mulhall's post.....i live in moranbah...it gets hella hot and can snap to cold every now and then...and yes that photo looks alot like my coping i have at our park.....its hard to deal wit but is there a solution....i mean i can't really blame the BMX riders here cause there not that advanced to do that type of tricks so yeah....i alway's thought coping damage from stunt pegs would be a little more like CHALK DRIVE STEEL RAMP...that fuckin this is farked....
but the major problem i have at the moment is our park has serious sand and mud issues....everytime it rains the park gets covered in red dirt...and i mean everytime...it cakes in and is almost inmpossible to get off sometimes...any solutions as to that proble would be greatly appreciated...its caused by the dirt piles surrounding the park
Scott Spring keeps tellin me about this stuff he uses called "Need it" (I think). He used it to fix the God Bowl and a few other problem parks and all have said that it's the best stuff to use.
